24 Naturally Occurring Betalains

What Are Betalains — and Why Do You Need Them?

Betalains are nature's most powerful cellular antioxidants — and prickly pear is their richest known source.

Betalains are a natural antioxidant found in only a handful of the world's plants. Researchers have identified 24 different kinds — and the only known source of all 24 naturally occurring betalains is the fruit of the prickly pear cactus. Think of them as body armor around your cells: they help your body fight inflammation at the cellular level, strengthen cells against toxins and harmful bacteria, and are produced in greater concentrations by plants that live in harsh, hot climates.

Reduces Bad Cholesterol

Contains soluble fiber that strongly reduces LDL cholesterol levels, while carotenoids and flavonoids help prevent LDL from being deposited in the arteries.

Reduces Risk of Blood Clots

Protects the thin lining of your blood vessels, reducing the inflammation that makes blood sticky and prone to clotting.

Protects Cells from Toxins

Shields many types of cells — especially brain cells — from toxins known to trigger tumor formation.

Protects Your Liver

Provides significant protection from toxins that directly affect the liver, and may also help reduce the effects of an alcohol hangover.

Key Studies & Findings

Certified Holistic Functional Nutrition Counselor

Hi, I'm Maggie.

I'm a Certified Holistic Functional Nutrition Counselor with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology & Nutrition from the University of Arizona — where I also competed as a collegiate triathlete, including the U.S. Collegiate Triathlon Championships.

I believe deeply in the body's ability to heal when given the right tools. My whole-food-first approach focuses on gut health, reducing inflammation, and building the daily habits that lead to lasting transformation.

I held an executive leadership role in the sports nutrition industry at a company I co-founded, working with endurance and Olympic athletes to develop and market performance-focused nutritional products.

Beyond counseling, one of my most meaningful projects included launching a Christian Community Garden to provide fresh, nutritious food to the underserved in our local community — the project model was studied by Cardinal Peter Turkson of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace under Pope Francis.

Throughout my life, my greatest fulfillment has come from being a Mom and as a servant leader in the communities where I have lived.

I am profoundly grateful for the gift of my Christian roots, my relationship with Jesus Christ, and my family — all of which are my greatest joy and my inspiration.
